Trees can make a lovely addition to your landscape, but they often come with their own set of risks and maintenance requirements. But what do tree specialists look for when doing an assessment the health of your tree?

Tree Consultation:

The initial consultation with your local arborist should involve a basic overview of your tree and its health. The arborist will observe the tree from all available angles to assess its lighting, soil, bark and leaf conditions, as well as look for any nearby structures on the property that could pose future risks.

They may also ask about the tree’s history including previous branch failures or pest infestations. For most arborists, the goal is to maintain or heal a tree if possible before deciding to remove it.

Tree Species:

Taking into account the tree species is just as important as the risk assessment itself. Just like plants, different species have different needs in order to grow and thrive. They also have different growing structures which could affect the overall risk assessment.

For example; the Eucalyptus Nicholii which is known for being shallow-rooted would be more likely to blow over in a stiff wind when compared to a maple tree. Some tree species are also more prone to diseases or they may be suited for a different climate than its currently growing in. All of which are important factors when assessing a tree’s needs.

Tree Health & Location:

Once the initial consultation has been complete, it’s time to dive deeper into the specific needs of the tree in question. Your arborist will likely review the tree’s canopy density, leaf colouring, bark condition, and old bark wounds that have healed themselves from past maintenance, pruning or weather injuries.

If the tree in question is near a structure on your property this could pose a potential risk during a strong storm, especially if the tree is dying or currently suffering from a pest infestation or disease. While the location isn’t the only factor in deciding on a tree removal, it is definitely an important one, especially when human safety or potential property damage is on the line.

Tree Removal:

After factoring in the tree’s overall health, species and location, the arborist will decide if the tree can be saved and maintained, or if a more drastic action is required.

Depending on where your tree is located, removal and pruning may require permits from the local municipality. When a permit is needed, some form of documentation is often required. Your local arborist should be able to assess whether or not a permit will be needed, and may even be able to help you obtain one if required.
